Because it Takes a Village
In BC, Success By 6® is a unique partnership among Credit Unions, United Ways, the BC Government through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and our communities.
Success By 6® is improving the lives of children by mobilizing the caring power of our communities. It is a prevention initiative intended to ensure that ALL preschool children have the necessary development and support for a lifetime of growth and achievement.
Building on the strength of a long-standing established network in our community, Success By 6® develops effective and sustainable community-based strategies. This approach is working to maximize the services and resources available to the preschool population. Success By 6® is doing in partnership, what could not be done alone.
In early 2009, the Sunshine Coast ECD Planning Table forged a unique agreement with Success by 6 BC and with the United Way Lower Mainland and launched our own local Success By 6® initiative.
Through research, best practices, and proven prevention and early intervention strategies partners address complex issues from many perspectives. Success By 6® works collaboratively on joint planning opportunities with a variety of organizations, corporations, government agencies and concerned citizens from the social, political, business, cultural and private sectors. Together we develop comprehensive, community-wide solutions that help us to champion the early years of children.
Sunshine Coast Success By 6 priorities include raising the awareness of the importance of the early years and providing funding to projects that help meet local needs. In 2008 and 2009, Success By 6 made close to $100,000 available to the community of service providers for programs and activities for children and families. Learn more here.

After announcing the termination of the province-wide Success By 6 initiative, the government has returned to the table and has promised to work with the partners to build a long-term sustainable model to support Success By 6 in the province. No dollar amount or timeline was indicated.
The Sunshine Coast community of early Years Community Developers has responded quickly and confidently to the news. While concerned about the impact to our local families, we are pleasede with the government's decision to work with the Success By 6 partnership. As a whole, determined to continue onward and upward with our local collaborations, partnerships, and early years services. WE WILL FIND A WAY!
It may be a time of change for the provincial SX6 initiative, but here on the Sunshine Coast, this is a (big) shift for us to navigate while we continue on our way to even better supports and resources for our families with young children, in part due to our unique adaptability. If any particular group is able to overcome adversity and to proceed through challenging times in order to serve our local kids, it is our early years community here.

A Great Investment
Longitudinal research shows that every $1 invested today in quality prevention and early intervention strategies saves society approximately $6 in corrective measures later. Success By 6® works to mobilize the Edmonton community now to reduce the future burden of more costly and less effective measures.
