Sunshine Coast Success By 6® Grants 2011 
The Sunshine Coast Early Childhood Development Planning Table is inviting applications for grants from the Success By 6® funds.

The Success By 6® funds provided by the Credit Unions of B.C., the United Way of the LowerMainland and the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Theyare allocated by a Selection Committee comprised of members of the Sunshine Coast Early Childhood Development Planning Table. Funds are intended to best serve the Sunshine Coast early years community by helping to support successful established programs, as well as by encouraging the development of new projects.

Submit your completed application by email to scecd@telus.net or deliver hard copy to Sunshine Coast Community Services Society, 5630 Inlet Ave, Box 1069 Sechelt, BC, V0N 3A0.

Applications must be received by 4 pm on Friday, May 20, 2011.

Applications to the fund must comprise:

  • completed Application Form
  • cover letter
  • any relevant supporting documentation.

Awards:
The number of applications selected for awards and the amounts of those awards will vary depending on the amount of funds available, on community priorities, project deliverables and quality of application. Successful applicants will be notified by phone call in June. Funding decisions are final. These grants must be spent in full by March 31, 2012. Interim progress and summary reports are required.

About Success By 6®

Success By 6® is an early childhood development initiative fundedby the Credit Unions of B.C., the United Way of the Lower Mainland and the Ministry of Children and FamilyDevelopment. It is dedicated to providing all children with a good start in life. It helps to ensure that children ages 0 to 6 develop the emotional, social, cognitive, and physical skills they need as they enter school.

Success By 6® builds and enhances community through engaging all citizens in early childhood development, and funding programs that strengthen services for young children and their families. Funded programs include literacy, nutrition, children's play, parenting and family skills development.

Prevention-focused, research-informed and community-based, Success By 6® envisions a community where all children are valued, respected, nurtured, loved and given the opportunity to develop to their full potential as creative, caring, competent and responsible adults.

About the Sunshine Coast Early Childhood Development Planning Table

The ECDPT is a local group who exists to champion, develop and implement our community’s Early Childhood projects, plans and initiatives.
 
We are a group of professionals whose work in some way impacts families with children aged 0-6. Our group includes parents, Sunshine Coast Regional District Parks and Recreation, School District 46, Sunshine Coast, Ministry ofChildren and Family Development, Vancouver Coastal Health, the Sunshine Coast Credit Union, Child Care administrators, Community School Coordinators, the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society and other Early Childhood Development professionals.

We meet monthly to forward the goals of our local Strategic Plan for Early Childhood Development. Projects include campaigns and events for families and children, which take place throughout the calendar year.

We serve every community from Langdale to Egmont.

We adhere to the objectives outlined in our 2010 ECD Strategic Plan:

  1. Creating welcoming communities that support healthy and active living for all children & families.
  2. Enhancing and developing spaces, places, and services for all children & families.
  3. Improving accessibility and affordability for all children & families.
  4. Acknowledging and complementing our ECD priorities and planning as articulated by the Sechelt First Nation, the Squamish people, and other local Aboriginal people


About the Success By 6® Grant Program

The 2011 Sunshine Coast Success By 6® Grant Program providesfunding to encourage individuals, groups, and organizations to develop community projects that will make our community a great place for families and children.

This year, up to $25,000 is available to support local initiatives. A portion of this year’s fund is intended to address specific goals of the local Aboriginal community.

The Success By 6® Grants are allocated by a Selection Committee comprised of members of the Sunshine Coast Early Childhood Development Planning Table in order to best serve our early years community by helping to support successful established programs, as well as by encouraging the development of new projects. The purpose of these funds is to provide financial support for programs and projects that benefit young children and their families on the Sunshine Coast.

Grantees must meet eligibility requirements and selection criteria. Grantees must complete both interim progress and final reports. The 2011 Success By 6® Grants must be spent by March 31, 2012.

Eligibility Requirements To be considered eligible for consideration in the selection process, project proposals will successfully demonstrate how they intend to:

·         Be relevant to children zero to six years old and/or their caregivers, including the perinatal period.

·         Not benefit any individual, group or organization in terms of financial profit.

·         Network with relevant community partners.

·         Support/enhance ourSunshine Coast ECD Strategic Plan objectives.

·         Enhance and develop spaces, places, and services for all children & families.

·         Improve accessibility and affordability for children & families.

·         Reflect and respect diversity, including local Aboriginal cultural considerations.

·         Be local.

·         Foster the development of skills, resources and capacity for families to ensure children develop to their full potential.

·         Make effective and accountable use of the funds.

·         Report what change they haveaffected (outcomes).


We recommend collaborative proposals and strongly endorse partnering with others who will contribute to the impact of the program.

The funds are not to be used for:

·         Private business seeking operational funds.

·         Projects that do not directly benefit the local early childhood community.

·         Upgrades and repairs on buildings.

·         Payments on outstanding debts.

·         Programs that benefit only one person.

Application Requirements

Applications must include an Application Form (included in this package), a cover letter as well as relevant supporting documentation.

Success By 6® Grant Program Selection Committee
The Sunshine Coast ECD Planning Table oversees the financial management of the Success By 6® Funds. The ECD Planning Table meets annually to review Success By 6® Fund financial statements and the application, eligibility, requirements and screening/selection criteria and processes. The ECD Community Facilitator, Pamela Richmond, will manage the facilitation of the process.

The Success By 6® Application Selection Committee is comprised of members of the Sunshine Coast ECD Planning Table. This Committee will oversee the application review and award process. The Selection Committee may fund a finite number of projects within the total budget.

A list of applicants with name and working relationship will be provided to the Selection Committee members prior to review of applications to establish potential conflict of interest issues. Any Selection Committee member who works/volunteers for an applicant will be expected to excuse him or herself from consideration of that application. Personal knowledge of an applicant is not sufficient to warrant their exclusion from review and/or discussion of that application.


Selection Criteria
The Selection Committee will first determine that each application is complete and complies with all eligibility requirements. Grants will be based on community priorities/need, project goals and relevance to our ECD Strategic Plan. Demand for funding is high. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee a funding award.

Proposals for Success By 6® funds mustclearly articulate project outcomes and benefits for the communities, specifically how the project will:

Be consistent with the Success By 6® Vision (see below in the “Miscellaneous” Section).
Support/enhance our ECD Strategic Plan objectives (see below in the “Miscellaneous” Section). 
Be inclusive in nature. Draw upon community resources and demonstrate resourcefulness. Meet an identified Success By 6® priority: Child/family friendly environments, Children’s health, Family support, Quality childcare, Early literacy, Recreation/culture Respond to gaps in services and resources. Be flexible and responsive to the needs of families in the community. Address barriers to access. Be culturally sensitive. Be effective in reaching families.Demonstrate a realistic budget for the activities outlined in the proposal. Demonstrate a network with relevant community partners.Foster the development of skills and capacity. Demonstrate the ability to make effective and accountable use of the funds.

Miscellaneous
Only those applications that meet all eligibility requirements will be assessed by the Selection Committee. Successful applicants will be required to submit interim progress and final reports.

Grants must be spent by March 31, 2012
